I wouldn’t really say he was his father figure. Eugene had his actual father at that time, and he was only being babysat for a short while by Dominic. As a kid, he probably looked up to him more like a friend/older brother.
The trope "I knew them when they were younger" is getting real old. It feels creepy honestly.
