I never read the novel so I don't know but I hope it's just the artist being like this, it's getting pretty annoying having Lloyd being called ugly when he isn't at all

Seriously though, from what I remember in the novel, passersby described them as handsome foreigner cosplayers. They didn't distinguish one as ugly and the other one as handsome.

Right. Him being "ugly" was mentioned only when it was necessary, which made it funny. And he never was described as really that hideous looking, but rather js a bit more plane and unattractive than the people around him.
