it felt like a eating a nothing sandwich

Theres a lot of potential with this story but everything just fell short. With these fantasy tropes, you’d hope it would hit At least one of these marks (interesting worldbuilding/plot, well written mc, solid couple chemistry) but this story hit none of that. Plot was lackluster, mc was poorly written and ml was just a nothing burger for 80+ chapters. Ml was supposedly obsessive AND possesive but why did it have no flavour? No salt no pepper no msg nothing. It felt blasphemous lmao the romance also just doesnt make sense.

The whole theme of finding closure in new friendships and experiences amidst grief and survivors guilt was done so poorly(?) (didnt get to know the names of mc’s old friends and their characteristics is so.. hilariously sad LMAO) and the potential to have it center more on the new friend group was wasted bc… thats the whole point of mc’s grieving. Instead it focused more on the mc and ml’s non existent chemistry which usually i’d love (if they have the chemistry!) but when u stand back and think about the overarching theme (and how the couple met which was lowkey blackmail lol) it kind of doesnt make sense at all? Other commentors highlighted the jarring-ness of the romance pretty well too (a solid 5/5 for ml’s desperate, anxious wrecked expression in the confession scene though lol def could go 3 more chps for the ml’s self reflection arc)

Maybe its Something about the way the artist adapted the novel that made the visual translation so odd. Maybe the novel is better, who knows, but still it doesnt make me curious enough to pick it up and read it. The dungeons grew repetitive and the whole world building about it felt like it had no weight to it since no solid rules or lore are established about the world. Story and ending was rushed and the panels/atmosphere and romance was jarring.

Tldr: Overall, its a good story for a light quick head empty read and a bad one if youre expecting a well written plot (๑•ㅂ•)و✧ IMO If youre looking for a story with the same suicidal mc x op flirty ml with the bl dungeon hunter trope + a compelling plot and theme (but better) then just go straight to Mission Save the Hunter (Death Delayed bc of The Will).

yeah i found that the self-reflection confession scene kind of came out of left field,,,, it felt like he was talking about wanting to control all of him (in what felt almost romantic /adjacent/ if any romance at all to me) a few panels ago and then BOOM ‘i can’t live without you’ (which is an i genre taly very romantic thing) ???? but i agree on it being a fun light read if you’re into this trope

You just gave me the review, that I needed. I was so confused as I was reading it (didn’t finished it) because it felt like it lacked of sth I cannot explain and you just explained it well! “Death Delayed Because of The Will” (the novel was so worth the read) definitely changed my standard towards this type of trope.

100 percent agreed I was ranting to a friend just about this comparing it to the amazingly written death delayed because of the will.

Lowkey the only time I was genuinely enjoying the story was when there was very clear and in your face foreshadowing that mc was manipulating the ml to allow him to kill himself. There were seriously too many times I was shouting at the screen in frustration wondering why the author didn't explore this part or that part more bcs the story really could've been so much more better. Too many parts were underwhelming and rushed to the point where I judt wanted to finish it hoping it would eventually get better.
