My theory is that he was badly bullied and didn't have the courage to defend himself. The dude he last fought was probably a whitness of his past self.
He then grew stronger and started hating weak people who don't stand up for themselves because they reminded him of himself. Which is why he seemingly hated Dan, and which is why he will now run to him (because Dan stood up for himself and left).
