Depending on the way you look at what happens you can kinda keep telling yourself that. It's all about how you see it though. I can't say he has a heart of gold but I do understand why he did it.
I'm sure we'll get a backstory and some explanation about the choices he has made. There will probably, most likely, be some kind of redemption arc that will make the MC forgive him for what he does.

I know its a story about a gangster and there is probably something fishy going on in a basement but I'm going to try to be ignorant and keep telling myself he's a gangster with a heart of gold.
