Nope, Rei wasn't miserable, but he still suffered for being forced to be who he wasn't for years. Haruko being a wonderful woman didn't erase the fact that his dad did him wrong.
Rei's dad really should've thanked Haruko. It's because she's such a wonderful woman that Rei found true friendship in her and didn't come to hate his father. If Haruko were a horrible woman and made his married life miserable, the outcome would've been so different.
