Here's some context: this is a rite of passage done to every noble ladies before they enter high society. They're meant to go through all the mockery and harrassment on their own and keep it together. What he's wrong for in this context is not giving her a heads-up about it because it didn't occur to him that noble ladies are usually told about this by their mothers beforehand.
