Well, it depends as to what you consider by the actual " plot ", like, it you're thinking of the highschool life (the I'm-learning-to-love-myself-by-socialising-and-occasionally-beating-up-my-bullies) then yes, it has strayed far off from that and is an entirely different story. But if you're considering the gangs, Charles choi shit as the plot, then no, the story has rather chosen to go in depth with those plots and explore it (mostly because they were doing well)

Though some people may have complains as to how the story is paced, since it's your typical backstory-fight-fightagain-fight-haidefeatedyou-loluthought-finallydefeatedu-yeabutdidu-trainingarc-friendship-emotionalshit-alilinfoontheplot-randomfocusononecharacter-backstory and repeat

But it's just the PTJ company milking lookism out cuz god damn are the fans (us) eating it up everytime.
