Never give up on your dreams just to please someone else. Because at the end of this life, you have to live with the choices you made and your regrets. The person you made the decision for likely won’t even be around then. Will it be worth it? A love that was meant to last will last through the temporary distance.

yeah that was like the whole point of the conflict. it was very realistic and readers with media literacy will understand both sides. yu was acting destructive because he’d been hurt and anxious over their families and the pressure of a long distance relationship that’ll last 4 years, and the fact that rui had apparently been thinking about it for a while. yuujirou was even prepared for a somewhat long distance rs (as seen by him looking up every school in japan w a design course), but it’s understandable to be overwhelmed by the distance of a whole other country. but yes asking rui not to go was selfish and reflective of his desire to stay together with rui. he’d been bottling up his worries ever since his first talk with rui and exploded during the christmas dinner. he himself understands that he was acting “stupid” because he was so in his head and basically getting controlled by his fears. imo, in the airport scene he asked rui not to go fully expecting that rui would go anyways, and him accepting that with no further complaints shows his development.
rui was selfish in the way that he’d decided to go to france to pursue his passion knowing it’d be a risk for his relationship as well as expecting that yuujirou would be waiting for him. he thought of himself as a “burden” to yuujirou and wanted to be someone who could be confident in supporting his partner (same as yuujirou) and decided he’d do what he thought would be best for them.
it’s quite easy to understand both of them. of course one should be able to chase their dreams no matter how far, and one is also allowed to get scared over the unknown, uncertain future. their reasons are both because they love each other, just manifested in diff ways because of course they are different people. it’s one of those problems that only end up strengthening their bond and allowing them to grow as individuals.
great read overall
i understand the people getting frustrated, and its really great that other people are defending too. but i just had to say that if youre gonna say Rui was "selfish" for his decision to study in France, Yuujirou was SO much more selfish for asking Rui not to. Maybe I just dont understand the bond between childhood friends turned lovers, but no matter who you are, nobody has the right to make decisions for another person's decisions in life for the sake of their own personal gain.
Rui was selfish in a way that he made a decision that had an effect on his whole life ahead, even if it meant he and Yuujirou was gonna get hurt in the process
Yuujirou was selfish in a way that he wanted to take away an important part of a person's decisions in life because he didn't want to be hurt in the process. (even so much more selfish because he basically gave up long before then suddenly last minute, boom no u shouldnt go)
i felt the need to say all of this because it rubbed me the wrong way that people were trying to look for Rui's wrong here. he did ABSOLUTRLY NOTHING wrong.
oh and its also worht mentioning, idk if maybe its a translation thing but i rlly hated how he said smthn like "you shouldnt go" instead of smthn likr "i dont want you to go". he said the former making it seem like he made the decision for Rui. both phrases convey almost the same meaning but veryy very different emotions
i wanna end this too by saying that i dont hate Yuujirou by any means. I absolutely HATED what he did to Rui, but in any case, one event does not define a whole person so hhhhhh as long as Rui is happy, im happy
anyway, 10/10 really good manga but would not read again bc hooh jt was frustrating
