I’m a local HKer! We do speak both languages but our mother tongue is Cantonese! Though because of politics, the younger generation (gen alpha) are influenced to speak Madarin instead. But if you’re a local in HK, you speak Cantonese. It has been an important part of our culture!

Locals in China mainly speaks Mandarin and other dialects, but HK is raised (?) differently and has a really different culture from China, mainly because of history with Britain.

Mafias/ gangs in HK also mostly speak Cantonese since it’s our mother tongue.

I’m not native in English so I’m not sure if I’m explaining it correctly, sorry TT

It’s our mother tongue in HK! Just like how Americans speak English, we speak Cantonese!
