Hypothesis

I could be wrong but I'm thinking something happened with Vercike in the past that has to do with tricking Cain or somehow seducing Cain and Agio found out and probably lost his mind and was about to destroy Vercike but perhaps Cain got in the way and died by Agio's hand instead. This is just a guess however and I'm really curious to find out what actually happened.

I literally was thinking something similar to that cause ver made it clear he'd make sure cain was desperate to always want him

I was thinking that but in the story it says a human gave into a vampire’s persuasion. I’m guessing it was Ver who tricked the human or something like that and ended up getting Cain killed.

See I'm not sure about whether that's the version the church tells people because they're the ones who carry the 'sin' of the god of the moon's death, but curiously Ver hasn't mentioned anything like that yet. So I'm not sure if that's an actual thing or if it's a resentment from Agio that eventually becomes the church's doctrine. It's super interesting tho :3

I was thinking that too, because the church does lie about the prophecy.

its convenient for the church to use them everytime they come back because it gives them power. if they actually fulfilled the prophecy they would no longer have that power.

Exactly as mentioned in the first season, no one is safe from the holy inquisition e.g Jack the dude who fell in love with Erica, which just continues to allude to the fact the church knows the moment the actual real prophecy is fulfilled their fucked hard
