+ there was never an official statement that said he was dead so I’ll still follow this in the hope of getting the rest of that story someday

Personally, I don't think Mako is dead, I think the "bag" he carried did not contain weapons, but the body parts of the guy who worked for Sunabe (I forgot his name). He used them to stage his "dead body" and make it look like he had unalived himself out of going crazy and not being able to leave the room.
I bet he was going to jump up and then do whatever he usually does, since they didn't shoot him.
