Yeah, the beginning is tough to understand because it keeps jumping time and characters, but if you keep reading without focusing on minor details, eventually it will get easier. Overall you have 4 main characters: Kinard, a young nobleman; Yesing, Kinard's right hand man; Shahid, Kinard's friend and also a nobleman and Alvin, a young boy who was kidnapped and then saved by Kinard (we start at his rescue).
10 years before the main timeline, Kinard was a young nobleman soon to be engaged to a woman named Judith. She and her family is accused of treason, and hence executed. A couple of doctors who were also in Kinard's close friends are murdered as well, and their very young son, Alvin, is kidnapped by a horrible man who does sick things to dead bodies.
Time passes, Kinard feeds on revenge to all people who harmed Judith and is quite bitter. Yesing, a boy he rescued around the same time the whole issue happened, helps him assume an identity as Chaff, a shady character he can use to investigate things. As Chaff, Kinard comes into contact with the sick doctor who kidnapped Alvin, who the doctor renamed as Lyron. Kinard kind of recognizes the boy as Alvin, who he thought had died, and helps him escape, bringing him home to take care of him after years of abuse and mistreatment.
The rest is easier to follow, because it's mostly Alvin and Kinard coping with traumas and developing romance, Yesing being too cool and Shahid being a dense idiot ready to horny jail *bonk*.
