I think it was mostly due to the fact that he couldn't relate to her on her most passionate subject since he showed that he was not like most boys when he was young who liked cartoons or those hero type of shows since it showed him being really insecure about not being "manly"? Then while feeling like an outsider he sees her showing her best smile to the other guy that I think also is what made him fall for her before ikywim
But it's not Abt him being "manly" or not, it's about her working on something that she loved as a child. Not to mention he was being insecure and putting it on to kasane just because she acts like her usual self around her co workers, which is for me is the Begining of him becoming kind of controlling of her to a small degree. Adapting for your partner is literally an important aspect of maintaining a relationship, which both of them do pretty well.
