Hm I been thinking it's due to Jo and tj eye color. Jo having blue eyes and tj have light brown eyes. Or the idea of wet sand, the more wet it the more you sink (like quicksand?) Basically Ian trying to maneuver OUT of his troubles (his trauma) and AROUND his love interest (both ML's)
