Backstory was supposed to make us root for the ML but honestly I kinda root for his friends he was forced to killed rather then him. What he went through was of course incredibly traumatic, no questions there and FL father is definitely a horrible guy but to project all his guilt, devastation, hatred and even love on to the FL because she broke this idolised mold he created of her (as others have already pointed out, along with their twisted parasocial relationship) and to continue to feel the same way even now honestly feels a bit childish. To feel that way back then when he had nothing might have made sense but to do so now just makes it feel like the dude never really matured and never realised that FL is a living breathing human being capable of change (something FL already pointed out after her first suicide). FL even in her depressed state feels more mature than him, she actually understood why the change happened and was necessary despite what it cost her, I just feel bad this story makes her carry the burden of the crimes committed by her forefathers that she was completely ignorant of and makes ignorance itself such a huge crime which makes no sense. For example how the FL apologised to Katherine right after SHE was shot and lost her only child and somehow the story projects that as the just thing??? Like completely get apologising for her ignorance but to do so right after SHE was hurt to the sister of her perpetrator seems to almost minimise any crime against her, like she almost deserves all the horrible things that happen to her simple because of her ignorance.
Spoilers ahead The writer of this story has clearly decided to make ignorance the greatest possible flaw a person could have and has decided to "punish" the FL for it to a disproportionate level (based on the spoilers FL definitely doesn't catch a break even after all this to the point she loses the proper functioning of her hands). I think I understand where she might come from because I am sure we all have read a lot of stories where MC benefits in ignorance while her family/ spouse keeps commiting horrible crimes and their ignorance never even pointed out but story goes the completely opposite direction and honesty I just pity the FL for being part of a story like this lol.
