I mean in his defence this is a world with magical flowers, items and maybe even real gods. It could be that he once was afflicted and his saliva and such now carry disinfectant particles as the afflicted really wanted him to touch em. Or at least that what everyone could believe. It could also be a joke but I think it's the former
