Human emotions are very complex even if they are fictional characters. You guys are still forgetting that they are young, they are not mature and don't know how to properly think things through.
Yeah, it sucks that he treats his brother like that but that's why he keeps switching to loving him or hating him, he just doesn't know how to deal with things because he's young. It's easier to think things through if you are reading it or more mature but I bet if you were in his shoes, you would act the same because you simply wouldn't know what to do.
