Yeah I had the same problem when I first started off .. i couldn't differentiate as to who is who .. but then I watched the Donghua.. I was still confused but continued .. then based on the Donghua character designs I read the novel and damn it was much better.
Novel is great for all the extra details
Manhua for the art style and Donghua for the audio-visuals.

funny enough. my first encounter with tcgf was through the show. watched it once couldn't understand anything. then i read some of the novel and still didn't know what was happening. after a year or so i read the novel again and everything clicked. same thing with MDZS. but i just had to get used to chinese novels and literature lol so intense for a simple mind like mine
