I haven't read this yet so not sure about context here but usually means they had sex. Unless you seeing them just sleeping together presume it means sex. Tricky phrase in English because it can mean both but most people will assume the sex meaning unless you say "in the same bed not sex"

Yeah I think I’m just in denial I don’t know maybe I just want to believed that they only slept an not having sex.
