i think this is a story about two opposites who use violent sex to satisfy themselves, at the same time there is a struggle in terms of morality and life views, and the two of them are trying to reconcile everything to cooperate for mutual benefit, as for Rape, i will not defend Hayden's actions, he really raped Brett (many people ignore it because Brett planned it in advance but it still doesn't change the fact), luckily for Hayden, Brett likes it. i think Hayden wouldn't rape anyone out of lust or revenge for his friends, if you pay close attention, Hayden himself had targeted Brett before the incident with Scott happened (in chapter 2 he masturbated while thinking about Brett even though he had previously admitted that he hated Brett), Scott's incident was just an excuse to push Hayden to Brett. Their relationship started out toxic but now it's getting better because as Brett agreed with Hayden, their cooperation is to maintain a normal life, help each other improve although currently I personally see Brett being more proactive and putting in more effort than Hayden, Hayden is still conflicted and trying to create distance with Brett but Hayden seems to have feelings first? so their relationship is starting to develop in a more romantic direction...

i don't know if their start would have been better if hayden hadn't raped brett. yes hayden hates brett's attitude but their "attraction" is mutual, maybe the story would have been built differently if hayden had just suppressed his pheromones on brett (like how he threatened nathan), and left as a warning. but it seems to brett that hayden raping him doesn't matter because he likes it anyway. the story could have been better but i'm fine with their relationship right now

Actually the rape was just a stepping stone for the relationship between these two to begin, i won't be too harsh because it started out as a 6 chapter short story,but yes it could have been handled better. because Hayden’s actions made me question his morality a lot. All the readers i know all said that hayden couldn't control himself because of the rut cycle, he was actually very gentle and kind. That true with ch.19, he acted like a mindless animal but not with ch.3,4, he was still sane enough to both mock Brett and rape Brett, and if Brett didn't secretly like what Hayden did, imagine how horrible were hayden's actions? back to my point, did Hayden really show that he loved or simply respected Brett as a person with such a start? because if it were me, even though I enjoyed having sex with him, I would not put absolute trust in someone who dared to rape me even if I provoked him. Of course, it is possible that the author also ignored Hayden’s moral inconsistency and blamed everything on Brett. It’s seems easy to see Hayden as the victim, and blame all the evil on Brett…
