Using magic or brainwashing as an explanation to try to smooth over what they did fixes absolutely nothing. It looked like he may be gullible, so he may not be people smart. So magic might not be involved, since it seemed Jaina needed to present herself as worthy of being backed by the Magic Tower Lord. So getting the brother to fall for her and lead to an engagement would be the start. It didn't appear to have any magic used before the regression, but we'll have to wait and see.

Let’s be honest, claiming being brainwashed or curse is an easy cop out to avoid being responsible for what you did. “Since I had no control over it, I shouldn’t be held responsible for it”.
