I understand what you mean. But at the same time on a psychological standpoint the guy threatening them wasn’t violent in the blood way he was violent in a sick pervert way. Those kinds of people are less likely to demand someone to hurt themselves in that kind of drastic way unless it was used as a threat to get them to do something else. Its however entirely in character to demand something intentionally emotionally devastating such as what he did. Though there were most definitely other options for how that situation could have gone or been written. A directly violent one wouldn’t have made sense.
