I think the point is that Souma was never actually that into Yuuji. He thought he was in love with him because he didn't understand why he would be jealous of seeing them kiss. He didn't assume he was in love with Kanade because he looked down on him because he couldn't reconcile who he became with the little kid he was. What he really loved was their friendship, but he couldn't understand the deep desperation he felt when he thought he might lose it. I feel like it may have been puppy love or a misunderstanding of his own feelings, but nothing like what Yuuji felt for Kanade and what I assume Kanade eventually grew to feel for Yuuji. Even Kanade's earnest love of Souma felt more like misplaced admiration than true love.
I was really hoping for a poly/ throuple. It seemed perfect because I feel like Souma didn’t get a proper character closure, it was just sorta pushed aside by the mangaka because Souma gave up on Yuuji. I feel rly bad for him despite what he did to Kana. The three of them should’ve ended up tgt but ig for a Japanese bl manga it’s still pretty out there for there to be a throuple huh?
