From what i understand.. there's been a time skip between the first time Adam escorted Michel to the s class gate and now that he has retired.
The gates have stopped appearing and they don't know what to do with the espers anymore. Because they were created from the DNA of an archangel not born. And Michel 00 was the first esper. So after that first mission adam became michel's guide and was also responsible for escorting him to the gate site. But ig something happened..
Since adam said something about "giving michel a second chance". There's also his leg injury that wasn't there before..and they wiped michel's memory too. Something must've happened. Ig we're gonna get a flashback...a long one at that..
