Not a spoiler perse because it's been heavily implied but I will enter down in case anyone doesn't want to know what the voice is...
The voice is the "author's influence". It's the author basically telling the characters what to do and to follow the story the way they want it. From what we've seen so far it basically brainwashes the characters and takes away their will BUT... as Edith accomplishes each challenge the outer characters are able to start thinking for themselves and challenging the voice. The more closely related they are to the OGFL & OGML/OG story the more brainwashed they are and more difficult for them to start thinking on their own.
Oh yes, I do get it now. The author doesn't want Edith in the picture so he do everything he can to throw her out. Thanks for this
