You fell for him being the "good guy", he was not. He was not a genius and he was not going to make the world a better place. Sometimes bad guys kill other bad guys, for all the dumb, childish reasons, masquerading as (self)righteousness. The real question is did the author mislead in order to educate on the error, or not, considering how many people have trouble figuring it out.
