It might not be that he doesn't understand sarcasm so much as he knows he's capable of meeting the father's challenge so the father will either have to accept him or admit to being a hypocrite.

Well, I guess he wasn’t a total idiot, he just wasn’t applying himself in school. He’s still a dumbass though, doing all this cuz he doesn’t understand sarcasm (￣∇￣")
