A random thought to throw into your contemplation: in Hayden's case, his version of 'good' was unhealthy and caused negative effects on his body, making controlling his pheromones more difficult. Like the person who suffers in silence before blowing up, or the religious child with a strict upbringing getting alcohol poisoning the minute they leave for college. For Hayden, it’s clear that brett is the only one he can actually relax around and not care too much about his bad side. Hayden was always holding back and on edge because of his bad side, Brett provided him the opportunity for him to momentarily let it go when he’s with him. You’re mainly upset at Brett, but Hayden seems to be much more care-free and healthier with the relationship now than before he met Brett.
I personally love brett and like how their personalities clash! Like the other commenters, i think the author hints that Hayden’s repression was bound to explode in an unhealthy way, and rather than trying to be the best version of himself it seemed like he did not like himself. Brett telling him he can handle him even if he looses control was probably a needed relief! I hope brett will come to be serious about hayden and love him the way hayden wants to be loved but somehow manage to hold onto that mischievous part of his character that may seem manipulative/sneaky to some but in my opinion makes him an interesting character.
You said it as if Hayden be forced to rape Brett, being forced to hold Brett hand immediately and go straight to a toilet to have sex, when Brett literally give him TIME to think. I don’t care if you hate Brett, that people tastes. But think Hayden as some innocent pure guy who unlucky ruined by Brett is ridiculous. What ruined in Hayden life? He relationship with Scott is awkward now? Scott have Crush on Hayden and Hayden can only ignore his feeling to keep friendship, their relationship already awkward af. Brett involved help Scott moving on and have new crush. Beside the relationship with Scott what ruined in Hayden life? He still go to school normal, eat luch with his own friend and only meet Brett when their horny. Not just Brett let Hayden keep living his normal life, but also help him relief his sexual frustrationl, help him improve health by take him to the gym ,he also helping Hayden open up his network for his future career? Like, their just fwb, Brett can fuck and go but he did every shit to help Hayden improving himself. Even Hayden himself said how his mental and health is improving when he start relationship with Brett. Do we even read the same story?
I think both things will happen. Even if it’s instinct, I don’t think Hayden is completely against the rough sex, but he also asked for Brett to give him a safe word.
So he willing to play ball, but also wants to have safe outlet which Brett ultimately agreed to and…..

I love Hayden, but I'm still trying to decide if I despise or barely tolerate Brett. Even if we put aside that he basically entrapped Hayden initially with his shitty plan, he is kinda annoying. He knows that Hayden is more serious than him in general (judging by how Hayden tries to hide the parts of himself he doesn't like, how he cherishes and tries to protect his friends, how he doesn't like drinking, etc) yet he keeps pushing Hayden to be more reliant on his instinct and be more like an animal (that was even stated by both of them), it feels weird. I get that someone might want to see a different side of someone they love or like sexually, but it feels disturbing when someone makes an effort to be their own version of "good" and hide the "bad" yet some asshole decides that he wants to fuck shit up and turn their life upside down. I haven't fully fleshed out my opinion on the subject yet but I'll be silly and say that it feels "icky" what Brett is doing...
