I think Owen is a psychopath and his obsession with fl stems from a need for control rather than love. He wants to own her in order to manipulate and use her.
When she becomes more independent and forms other relationships he becomes jealous because she is existing outside of her relationship with him, he is losing a valuable tool as she distances herself. He gets furious when things don’t go the way he wishes as he feels powerless and this contradicts his self image as superior to others.
