Brett seem to be a type who can’t understand genuine love. He seem to be more comfortable with people who hate or have bad feelings for him than with who acting friendly to him?
if someone loves you or likes you with his type of influence, you're always second-guessing someone's real intentions

i think brett thinks of it as an equal exchange like oh i'm getting something out of this, i'll pay you back in full with what i'm capable of (ie. getting hayden into an environment where he can make connections). he also genuinely enjoys hanging out with hayden. you could argue that he has feelings he's unaware of, but for brett at least it's as simple as "oh i'm having a good time, this is working out, i'm enjoying it while it lasts and i'll make sure you're having a good time too." in that way he's very "fair" but it's hard to tell if his emotions can go deeper to love
Yeah you are right, but i just want to discuss why Brett seem too more attracted to people who behave like they hating him. Because hate seem more clear for him than love.
Yeah for Brett, everything is fair and game so it hard to have a “ beautiful selfless love” like Hayden want. But maybe the event of the end of ss1 will change thing.
Thats a good theory. he’s surrounded by fake behavior so he’s interested in real instinctual behaviors. I would also say him being surrounded by liars and fakes is a good explanation for why he is approaching this relationship as transactional. He’s a bored rich boy who’s seen a lot of bad behavior and accepted it- so his morals are skewed. His belief structure is about finding mutual pleasure and excitement, and his manipulative tendencies come from living in a world where playing games is mandatory- particularly if you want to draw out real emotions from others. Not surprisingly he is drawn to his opposite who is a serious, romantic and controlled. While he is frivolous, realistic and flexible.
I would add being manipulative is probably a survival mechanism- but that could be me making excuses for him because i brett.
The more we read, Brett become more contradictory. He sometimes acting like he want something more with Hayden but also don’t want more than what they are now. So is Hard to tell he genuine have any feeling for Hayden or just playing around.
We can only guessing from information we do know about him. Brett came from rich family and his social skill is super good. He always have that fake friendly smile to anyone who interact with him. The relationship he have with other people pretty fake and distance
The three people he seem genuine close with is Martin, his best friend who “hating” him, his Brother who also feel uncomfortable with him, and you know, Hayden. So i have theory, maybe Brett love violent hardcore sex because it feel real to him? It’s not the faking like how people around him acting, but it raw and real. That why is exciting him and he addicting to it.
And that why the way Hayden behave gentlely and loving is weird him out. That not what he sign up with Hayden.
