Can we stop pretending that every victim of abuse should act in the same way? I know it is shocking for most people because this is the only thing that is fed to the public, but defense mechanisms are much more complex, and not everyone will act in the same way. Yes, some people can talk about their abuse in a casual way, even jocking about it. Yes, some people don't understand the gravity of what happened to them. Yes, some people experience amnesia, and their memories about the abuse don't coincide with what actually happened. Yes, some people are going to minimize their abuse. Yes, some people will dissociate from what happened to them. Yes, some people will feel that what happened to them was exaggerated by others. Yes, some people are not able to process what happened. Yes, some people will think that what happened to them was not even REAL. To me, the main character doesn't seem fine, but rather in survival mode and completely accustomed to abuse. There is a lot of guilt too, which can definitely play a role. So I don't think his actions are completely unrealistic
and i I understand where you're coming from, but I think it's important to consider that certain reactions to abuse can still seem unrealistic to some people, especially in extreme situations. While it's true that defense mechanisms and coping strategies are varied, there's also a need for these depictions to make sense within the context of the character's development and the overall narrative.
If a character seems overly casual or dismissive about severe trauma without any clear explanation or backstory that justifies this behavior, it can be jarring and might detract from the story's authenticity. Additionally, while it's essential to represent a wide range of responses, there's a risk of normalizing or trivializing serious issues if not handled carefully. Balancing realism with sensitivity is key to portraying trauma in a way that is both respectful and believable.
nah, this is wild. im pretty sure mc got dropped as a baby bc how else would he be so fucking casual about being the victim of sexual assaults. Is he sexually dense?
