Their parents could be divorced. In most Asian countries when parents divorce they each choose a kid to keep. Also she probably knows her sister is psychotic and will get herself in prison.

Something is off.. why did they go to separate middle schools in the first place? Why didn't she want a friend to meet her? And even tho I think she cares in her own twisted way her sister seems scared of her as well.
