They might not have self respect or they cannot afford to have self-respect on them. Also, it's not only the family who can force you into that marriage, it might be the society, situation or your own desire. And that's all for my yapping. That was the normal behavior at that time, at least they show them as mature women in these stories, but in reality they married them at 13,14,15 years old when they reached 18 they were too old :( even in the conception of a child some of them died because they conceived very young.

To understand something, we should have enough information to interpret however in a story controlled by an author, the info we get are limited by the author. So, The thing is, we won't understand why they "don't have self respect" unless we will be given enough context. (Anyways, I'm just yapping. Just ignore this.
