and if he's travelling to these countries i think without her he'd be leaving her for long periods at a time

I think that’s part of it. His dream is very important to him and he wanted to emphasize that to her. But at the same time he really does love her and wants her to know that. Am I missing something? I don’t quite understand why he didn’t feel like he could tell her his backstory up until now. It was being built up like this big obstacle that was going to make their future dreams clash but it was just him telling her his past and that he loved her
