I don't blame emperor for being cold towards Etienne because the empress raped him. Even if it was me I wouldn't be comfortable with a child out of rape. But the emperor shouldn't expect Etienne to trust him or love him as a father. He have ignored him far too much. I also agree that the Emperor is cowardly.
