Right. I used to not care because that was fiction, and I am not saying that I condoned it. I enjoy and consume a lot of controversial and immoral content without condoning disgusting acts and atrocities, but sadly, there are people who indeed romanticize it and think that is okay to condone and support sexual assaults, grooming and rape.
The mental gymnastics that rapist apologists and groomers do to justify that shit is abnormal
absolutely. Honestly, I think that as all things, SA has a place in media. To draw awareness, to open people up about the topic, to get people to think about the way it affects the victims, think baby reindeer. But manga, and manhwa LOVES to romanticize it, which isnt all that surprising considering the mentalities of the countries in question, but its the way you have to ABSOLOULUTELY GO OUT OF YOUR WAY to add this content, and so often, that gets to me. like, one or two weirdos, sure, but it would be easier to make a healthy relationship, especially because it is often in comics where the relationships are portrayed as damn near perfect aside from this garbage, like, wouldn't it just be easier to not use rape as a romantic device, like WTF.
There's this one manhwa that has IMPLIED SA, and you know what, it did a GREAT JOB! It showed how it affected the victim, how he worked his way through it with the help of new love, and the mental toll of having this person who SA'd him, and was also his closest friend, worm his way back into his life, it did an AWESOME JOB. and it wasnt romanticized even once!
Could you please tell me the name of that Manhwa? Do you refer to The Prey?
Right, agreed with everything you said. Censorship is harmful because it's no different than indoctrination and brainwashing, as it limits our ability to think by ourselves and distinguishing immoral and moral/ethical actions and words, but media, especially mangas and webtoons do romanticize and glorify sexual assaults, rape, grooming, toxicity and abuse as they are seen as romantic and strong, passionate love which a lot of people agree with, and think it's okay to apply it in real life with real people which increases homophobia, misogyny, rape, grooming, and pornography culture.
I am not surprised too. Even in harmless, soft shoujo, you can see and notice the misogyny as the authors project the idea and concept of women should be submissive and some homophobia such as if men are not interested in women then they are gay and can be changed as long as they meet the right woman who will change them
i dont remember the name of it, but i darn well remember the cover, I'll check through one of my lists and get back to you.
(EDIT- nvm, it took forever but i found it: https://www.mangago.zone/read-manga/back_to_school/)
in the meantime, here are some that also fit this criteria:
https://www.mangago.zone/read-manga/boy_meets_maria/ (contains two accounts of SA, none of which are romanticized, it is a very beautiful story, very sad. short and easy to manage.)
https://www.mangago.zone/read-manga/kiraide_isasete/ (I like this one especially because it takes place in the omegaverse, a genre i usually very much dislike, and addresses basically all the issues with usual portrayal of the universe. this handles SA very gracefully, while remaining cute and wholesome for the most part [following the victims new love and their will to not let trauma consume their life])
https://www.mangago.zone/read-manga/zankoku_na_kami_ga_shihai_suru/
(this one addresses the evil nature of SA itself, and is very brutal and intense. It shows the mental deterioration of the victim in all stages of abuse, before, during, and the effects of the after math. It is fairly long, and not easily digestible. do not read this for a fun time.)
hope you enjoy them! for the right reasons, of course.
absolutely! I love how they made it complicated, he didnt have it in his heart to hate him completely, but he wasn't soft, he didnt forgive and forget, and he overcame his trauma with the help of new love! Its just, more realistic somehow. these kinds of things often happen with people close to you the people you least expect, i imagine it would be hard to know how to feel.
Do Yaoi authors die or get cursed if they don't romanticize S.A?
