It's not an either or situation. Most people want the mc to grow a backbone and leave AND find love with a better person. It's not about being saved. It's about finding a better love and happiness without the shitty ml.
Its to make value out of MC like ml is shitty and don't value mc enough that he won't be taken by another when second lead enters it makes ml realise one he is not keeping or valuing is going go another person so second lead play part of make up for current disastrous relationship. -- that's what I learnt so far lol
I can see the reasoning above (I hope i can like it but there's no button) but the problem in second ml in a non love triangle romance is that they are just display or something some of them even bought more problems to the mc so I still don't understand their necessity. Maybe I'm just being to critical because I'm tired of mcs that needed another man to be better or realized that the ml is shitty, like for the love of god it would be better for the mc to grow backbone on their own without having to think of another man's love for them lol. I get the idea that the mc needs someone to value and love them but my problem in this kind of trope is the second ml always appears when mc and ml's problem or conflict is at its peak, adding more drama and misunderstanding. Maybe I'm just nitpicking because this trope is already overused

Why do ppl always like the idea of having second ml in a romance stories that is not a love triangle centered?
Then they constantly wish for it just to make the ml realize his shity behavior or to save mc (understandable in some stories) but what you should be wishing for is for mc to grow some backbone. I know I sound like i am invalidating these ppl but it's just funny because they always wish for second ml then they be shitting on the artist or author if the second ml is not the end game even if the story is not a love triangle romance lol
I know it's not that deep but I always see this in comment section of romance story with red flag ml they always wanted their mc (regardless of gender) to be save by somebody not save by themselves.
