I think it was mentioned that the parents has usual route for traveling and he even suggested a different path but the letter didn't reach the parents since the path is full of dirt and mud unlike the more stable one he is suggesting.
As for the fire we can work with our imagination lol but it would be great if the story has nore chapters to execute it well
