if you think about the chapter where jorris’ brother and Tera are on the balcony, the brother says something along the lines of leaving the kids alive, which means they ultimately become orphans, which then leads them a scar to always remember Black Death (I think) and that that gave him satisfaction. But maybe if it really was the initiation it could’ve been that both had to do it together (since they were always together said Jorris) and Jorris’ brother left the boy alive to leave a “scar” so that Black Death will be remembered. Or maybe it was just the initiation of Tera and he didn’t have the heart to kill the boy ? Or maybe someone else of Black Death didn’t have the heart, even though Black Death is the cruelest gang in Paris at that moment. Or simply the boy wasn’t there when the fire happened. By the way why do you think one of them committed suicide by hanging ? Ps. Everything is speculation .. (sorry for the grammar error, not a native)

joris said tera and his bro joined black death at the same time. i'd like to think their (or tera's) initiation was the boy's family and we can only speculate as to what happened though i feel like one of them committed suicide by hanging. i do believe those figures in his nightmares are his family plus a member of black death who he seems to fear greatly
i wonder why hes alive though? was he not with them when that event took place? did a black member had a change of heart and thought it too cruel to slaughter a child? was it tera? did tera cover his eyes when he witnessed or walked into their deaths. the boy says his eyes are scratched out because he couldn't see. some of the drawings his therapist has shows the horned figure covering his eyes
the white line, i keep thinking its light from between a pair of doors closing or opening. was he hiding from behind one and someone found him or did his savior hid him behind one?
