i really recommend you read the novel bc no one can tell this story as good as how meatbun did it originally. but for the main points, basically, all of this is happening bc mo ran was cursed to hate the person he loved the most. obviously, that's chu wanning. that's why he did all of that in his past life. in this current life, instead of shi mei dying, it was chu wanning who died whilst saving mo ran. mo ran had to bring back chu wanning's soul to bring him back to life and found out all the things that cwn did for him. esp, how kind cwn had been to him (cooking his fav wontons that he thought shi mei made) he regretted so hard after that and swore to only treat cwn as his god from then on. there's so many things that happened after it and it's doing the novel injustice to spoil it like this. haha
Read the novel long ago !! This mfing story nearly took my soul out with all the fucking angst . even the side characters were not given mercy . one of the few fictional works that had me crying out loud .
