Since it was at medieval period, marrying in your 16 is quite common. Heck my great grandma got married at 9. And my Great grandpa was 20 at that time.
Actually even now in some state and countries 16 is a legal marriageable age. And having 7 years of deference is nothing.

This was still written by a modern person and her trauma could easily make a good excuse for late marriage in historical context, but I guess japanese culture doesnot see 16 and 23 as problematic
