This is how I see it. It’s a misunderstanding. From Kana’s perspective, he’s in love with Naho. He notices his friends taking interest in naho’s cuteness, so he says he’s average to shoo them away. He’s obsessive and jealous (he didn’t want naho playing with the other kid in that childhood memory). In my opinion, he looked really shocked when naho said all that so I don’t think all this was intentional. I don’t really understand the aoi part tho, could be the translation.
No he doesn't like Aoi. Aoi was moving away for college so Kana wanted to spend more time together with Aoi to make up for it. Kana told Naho that Kana and Naho would be together for a long time, so he figured he'd prioritize Aoi for the last few weeks before he was gone. Naho then suggested that Kana should just take a train to see Aoi on the weekend, but Kana told Naho that he got along with Aoi but did not feel like he would need to go that far to see him.
I don't know why Kana told his friends that Naho was average, but Kana told Naho that objectively Naho's face is average, but it doesn't matter because to him, Naho is the cutest.
Kana is not the asshole people make him out to be tbh. He's possessive of Naho, and because the blondie and Aoi kept calling Naho cute, Kana didn't want Naho to see them because he was afraid they would fall for Naho too. That's his biggest red flag. But he has treated Naho pretty well (perhaps minus the average face comment he made to his friends which I suppose is bc he didn't want his friends to think Naho is cute). But Kana didn't ignore Naho like many people thought, or made fun of Naho. In fact Kana checked on Naho when Naho was acting strange.
