Or maybe the Duchess warned them about the trap she set for the elders. The parents aren't the head of the family no more so all they could do would be stalling some time until our FL and Ml set things straight between them just like what's happening in this chapter. Their establishing trust between them and the ml isn't the type to instinctively trust her. I'm sure he had his ways of collecting information that not even our FL no about. He knows the plan even if it wasn't actually discussed by our dear FL.
