He didn’t choose to forget, he was also an amnesiac lmfao. He genuinely lost his memories and genuinely did like her back then, he even wrote her tons of letters when he knew he would get into trouble for writing them and wouldn’t even be able to send them at the time since a spy was rumored to be around when he was in the army. He lost those memories though.
