
1) The clan itself was suffering, regardless of his actions, because they were being kidnapped and held hostage by the emperor’s mercy. So other than the outliers, I think they were kind of happy to end their own form of suffering. 2) If his brother had died in the fire, then he probably wouldn’t have gone through with the plan. 3) He had to wait for the curse to wear off and for her to come of age.
I’m not saying that she didn’t suffer, and yes, it would have been nice if he had found another solution. But it wasn’t greed that drove his actions. It was the only solution he could come up with at the time, given their situation. Had her face not been marred or the clan survived, either his brother would have taken her, or she would have been killed and replaced by another. So ultimately she would have suffered regardless.
