Just reread the last couple chapters.
It's alternating between the past that Freeman is narrating to Beni and the present where Boss and that freak's gang are fighting.
The part where Freeman showed up is the present. At some point he left Beni to help the boss out cuz he always knew that meeting up with that gang would be dangerous.
