I think he had a thing already with the old friend/ mutual classmate back in college, or atthe very least a crush on her. To me is seems like the husband always tries to push down his wife quality so he can control her (mentally,emotionally, and sometimes verbally abusive). The things he try to control her to do, is something he wants to do to the "old friend" chick, so he projecting onto his wife. I also think he proposes to her so abruptly because the "old friend" was getting married. Even though their relationship was iffy, because he was leading her on, he still decided to propose because he was projecting.
