Babe I don’t think u understand the concept of a ‘genre’ or ‘subgenre’. A genre is just a catergory or style of depicting a piece of art. It’s a component that frames the tone or background of a story not direct the trajectory of the story. It’s not an iron clad rule. It’s more like suggestions. If a story is repetitive in its plot (similar to other stories) then yes it is shitty and unoriginal writing. This Manwha is most likely just ragebait and a cashgrab. And lately it has gotten so boring my knees hurt (like nothing is progressing plot-wise) Mingwha is probably dragging out the end to get more money from the ‘filler’ eps.
(And this is not a hate comment I hope there’s so misunderstanding
I actually completely understand what a genre and a subgenre is which is exactly why I'm saying it. No one talked about iron clad rule, however just like most genres there are rules and different tropes that the author follows which is why it end up in that category in the first place.
A category is what you end up falling into after your piece is analyzed. You can either aim for it or end up in it. So don't worry, I very much know what I'm talking about when I say it's a toxic subgenre in the yaoi genre, and is a specific trope in that subgenre, but thank you for the explanation, maybe it will be of use to someone passing by.
Ragebait isn't a thing, cash grab is. However that is absolutely not cashgrab. If you want an example of it then go read whose your daddy or Codename Anastasia. That will give you an insight of what actual cashgrab with.
And if you find this type of story repetitive, then maybe you should stop reading this type of story and go read something else because, as I said, you aren't the target audience. I've been reading BL for over 10 years, and A FUCK TON of that on top of it.
And guess what? I've seen most, if not all the tropes in the toxic subgenres, in webtoon, manga and even anime. You will never see me saying it's repetitive though, you know why? Because I am the target audience. And there are a fuck ton of people like me, which is how so many toxic BLs are successful.
If you want renewal in the trajectory toxic BL just isn't for you. After 10 years you best believe I am rarely ever surprised, I know where it goes and even often approximately how it will end. But I don't mind, why? Because the purpose isn't the mystery of where it's going it's how.
And the fact that you call that filler EPs shows that you don't understand how narrative structure applies in toxic BL. It's great to know what a genre is, but if you want to criticize a plot you might want to get knowledge about narrative structures first and observe how they are applied.
I am tired of explaining such concepts, but basically:
We have several types of arc in toxic BL. Jealousy, compassion/special treatment, realization. We can have others but these are the main, most common steps, ok?
If you get past special treatment and jealousy stage, it means there's only one stage left, realization, alright?
Well in narrative structure, you have different phases: the set up/initiao situation, ascending action/confrontation (problems/adventure) then descending action which is resolution of problems/things calling down/falling into place until the final situation which is the last phase.
Now how do those two structures work together? Well:
Special treatment and jealousy usually occurs during second phase meanwhile realization occurs in the descending phase.
So either the current arc is a high ascending action (so soon a climax will trigger descending action) or it is the trigger that will go to descending action.
So we've already passed 2 main evolution stages of toxic stories and only the final one is left. Not even realizing it and not knowing in which regular phase of the trope we're in just proves that you aren't the target audience.
There was no need to get so work up over what they said. Honestly i've also been reading a lot of manhwas since a few years, a lot of BL and others genre. And i did read a lot of the toxic subgenres. There was no generalisation here i'm not saying all manhwas of that subgenre are boring i'm saying this one is. And it is repetetive, they not all are. You can even take BJ Alex for example i liked BJ Alex. This one wellll i kept on reading it because well it was the same author as BJ Alex tbh that's the only reason i picked it up in the 1st place and this was just a big disapointment for me. Good for you if you like it, i was just stating my opinion and i will not stop reading it because i do want to know how the story will turn out and if the characters will finally know some kind of evolution. But for now it's been like 20 chapters that its just them having sex, and there is a fight but his shoulder hurt he still does the fight and jookyung wins then get mad for some reason and scream at kim dan then kim dan get sad and worried and then it's that all over again. Just boring repetive and doesnt go anywhere for now. I'm not criticizing the subgenre i'm criticizing the story, bc yes this story is boring but not other manhwa that are included in the same subgenre. Thats all.
BJ Alex isn't a toxic BL.
And by what you are describing as repetitive, I can tell that you don't know what the different steps of a toxic BL are, even though I gave some of them to you. However, those steps basically tell you where you are in the story, if you are near the final phase of narrative structure or not. And here, we are nearing it and you don't even see it because you haven't identified the steps.
Judging from how you describe it, you don't even understand what the different events that happened mean. You just base yourself on the characters' reactions to them to say they're repetitive, which isn't how repetition works. Repetition is when an event has the same structure, like fairy tail for example: "villain comes, fight villain, win by the power of friendship" over and over without ever advancing in the plot. The event itself has the same structure no matter how the characters react to it.
Here, you can't say that Dan's grandma arc (sympathy arc), the other guy arc (the jealousy arc), the birthday arc (realizing MC's love arc) are the same just because you don't like how the characters react to it. It's all different parts of a toxic BL that indicate how close you are to the end no matter what the toxic BL is. Here, the only steps left are for jaekyung to realize his feelings and for Dan to forgive him.
So clearly you just don't know how to identify the different steps of a toxic BL.
I took the freedom to check your library because you don't seem to know how toxic BL works and it confirmed what I thought. You mostly read non-toxic BL and other things, assuming this is your full library. So I wonder what your range is to compare to other toxic stories. You mentioned BJ Alex which isn't even a toxic story at all so I hope you weren't saying that it is, because if you think it was a toxic BL then you probably don't even read enough toxic BL to be able to tell. Your library is basically mine from like 6-7 years ago, before I joined mangago. Just random BL. Though I didn't read straight stuff.
Just say that you don't like it and YOU find it boring, that will be either because you don't have the knowledge, the range or the experience to give constructive criticism and you proved it.
I can't keep explain to you different concepts just because you insist on using concept you don't understand to intellectualize your opinion instead of just saying you don't like it.
You don't even know how toxic BL works, you barely read toxic BL, you think BJ Alex is comparable even though it's not toxic at all.
Now I think I've explained enough and if after this you still don't understand that your opinion how no intellectual foundation and is just how you feel, that's a you problem now. I'm done explaining everything to you about a subgenre you clearly don't understand.
I have spent enough time on this, so I'm gonna take my leave for good. Goodbye.
Honestly where is the story even going at this point. It's just kinda getting boring now. It's not even only the story, the characters as well i don't feel like we saw any character development in 50 chapters (both of them)... i kinda want to drop this but i want to know what's gonna happens as well. My relationship with this manhwa is as toxic as the relation between the 2 male lead fr
