What he meant was he wanted people to be able to fly from anywhere. Planes need a port to land, which doesn't exist in many small islands like his hometown. The only way to reach there is by ship, which was the reason why his grandma couldn't see his grandpa prior to his death. That's why he thought of making people fly.
